How to Calculate Aspect Ratio & Missing Dimensions
An aspect ratio defines the proportional relationship between an image, screen, or video’s width and height. It is expressed as two integers separated by a colon, represented mathematically as Width : Height (or X : Y). It describes the geometric shape rather than the literal physical measurement or pixel count.
Divide both dimensions by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) to reduce the ratio into simplest whole terms (e.g. 1920 ÷ 120 = 16, 1080 ÷ 120 = 9 → 16:9).
To scale an image while locking 16:9 proportions at a width of 1280px: (1280 × 9) ÷ 16 = 720px.
To scale an image while locking 4:3 proportions at a height of 600px: (600 × 4) ÷ 3 = 800px.
Common Aspect Ratios & Standard Resolution Cheat Sheet
Quick reference table comparing standard display formats, typical pixel dimensions, total megapixels, and common use cases:
| Ratio | Standard Name | Common Pixel Resolutions | Megapixels | Primary Use Cases |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16:9 | Widescreen / HD | 1920×1080 (FHD), 2560×1440 (2K), 3840×2160 (4K UHD) | 2.07 – 8.29 MP | YouTube, modern TV, PC monitors, video streaming |
| 9:16 | Vertical Widescreen | 1080×1920, 720×1280, 2160×3840 | 0.92 – 2.07 MP | TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, mobile stories |
| 4:3 | Standard / Fullscreen | 1024×768 (XGA), 1600×1200 (UXGA), 640×480 (VGA) | 0.31 – 1.92 MP | iPad screens, classic photography, CRT TVs, retro gaming |
| 1:1 | Square | 1080×1080, 2048×2048, 512×512 | 0.26 – 4.19 MP | Instagram feed posts, avatars, e-commerce product listings |
| 21:9 | Ultrawide Cinematic | 2560×1080 (UW-FHD), 3440×1440 (UW-QHD), 5120×2160 (5K2K) | 2.76 – 11.06 MP | Anamorphic cinema, ultrawide gaming, productivity monitors |
| 3:2 | 35mm Classic Photography | 1080×720, 2160×1440, 3000×2000 | 0.78 – 6.00 MP | DSLR camera sensors, Microsoft Surface displays |
Aspect Ratio vs. Display Resolution: What Is the Difference?
While frequently conflated, aspect ratio and resolution govern two entirely distinct dimensions of visual media:
Specifies the relative proportion between width and height. A 720p HD video (1280×720), a 1080p FHD video (1920×1080), and a 4K UHD video (3840×2160) all possess the exact identical 16:9 aspect ratio. They display the exact same rectangular geometry without black bars (letterboxing).
Specifies the total number of distinct pixels contained within the canvas. Higher resolutions pack more individual pixels into the same aspect ratio, resulting in sharper detail, crisp typography, and greater fidelity when rendered on large displays.
Preventing Layout Shift (CLS) with Native CSS aspect-ratio
Historically, web developers relied on the "padding-bottom percentage hack" to maintain responsive aspect ratios for videos and responsive imagery. Modern browsers natively support the CSS aspect-ratio property, allowing you to lock container geometry before media assets finish loading, completely eliminating Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS):
.responsive-video {
width: 100%;
aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;
object-fit: cover;
} <div class="aspect-video w-full">...</div>
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best aspect ratio for social media?
For vertical video feeds like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, use 9:16 (1080×1920). For Instagram grid posts, 1:1 (1080×1080) or 4:5 (1080×1350) provide maximum screen real estate on mobile devices.
How do I calculate pixel aspect ratio without a calculator?
Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of your width and height. For example, with an image measuring 1280×720, divide both numbers by 80 to get 16 and 9, giving an aspect ratio of 16:9.
What causes black bars (letterboxing / pillarboxing)?
Black bars occur when the aspect ratio of your content does not match the aspect ratio of the viewing screen. Playing a 4:3 video on a 16:9 monitor results in black bars on the sides (pillarboxing), while playing a 21:9 cinematic movie on a 16:9 TV results in black bars on top and bottom (letterboxing).
Why does resizing an image cause distortion or stretching?
Distortion occurs when an image’s width and height are altered independently without preserving the original aspect ratio. Always lock the ratio or calculate the corresponding height when changing the width before exporting.
